Ethics is the Foundation and the Goal: AI, Mental Health and Ethical Necessities

Purpose Statement:

This research curriculum aims to develop a wise, practical and relevant approach to establishing ethical frameworks at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the business of healthcare. Licensed and unlicensed professionals play a crucial role in influencing the mental well-being of individuals within a landscape shaped by evolving and sometimes arbitrary concepts of the mind, health, and human flourishing. As the market for mental health services expands, decisions on ethical conduct in the context of identifying market needs, design and development, and integration or application of artificial intelligence in the course of servicing mental wellbeing become more susceptible to market forces and regulatory capture.

The research examines historical antecedents that have shaped current ethical frameworks at the cultural level of society, using this knowledge to navigate the moral dilemmas arising from the increasing integration of AI technologies into this complex domain. Rather than offering simplistic solutions to the intricate issues surrounding AI ethics in healthcare, the study advocates for a foundational approach to aligning this novel intelligence infrastructure with the ethical development of its creators. It seeks for an ethics that flows from a foundation of wisdom and that flows into a technology that enhances ethical life.

Through a multidisciplinary inquiry, participants will deepen their comprehension of the ethical imperatives inherent in today’s dynamic and complex contexts. This process aims to cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a nuanced perspective necessary for promoting responsible innovation and ethical decision-making in the fields of mental health and artificial intelligence.
